Stars Over Prada Marfa

The middle of the West Texas desert isn’t the first place you’d expect to find a fully stocked Prada store but just a few miles outside of Valentine Texas that what you will find. Ok it not an actual Prada store its front door doesn’t open and it only has right shoes and the purses have no bottom even if you find one you want you can’t buy it. You will need to go to real Prada store for that. Needless to say there are some that will do anything to shop there and it has been vandalized several times now so the creators put in a security system with gps devices in the purses and camera and stronger glass for those considering a dark night break in. Other wise it is a great place to drive out to and get your selfie of you and Prada Marfa store to prove you were there if thats your thing. The two artist that put this together Elmgreen and Dragset decided this was the place for their art display. Maybe they were trying to prove that people will drive to the end of the planet to get a selfie not sure what it represents, consumerism, or humor whatever it has made a mark on the tiny town of Valentine. The one nice thing is that made it of biodegradable adobe like material so over time it will go back to it natural state. The spent around 80,000 on this so hopefully it will take a while so they get there money out of it.

Stars Over Prada Marfa : Prints Available

On our latest trip to west Texas we decided to see if we could capture the famous Prada Marfa building with a background of stars. The one thing about this area of west Texas is its wonderful dark skies where you can actully capture stars. The road between Marfa and Valentine was so dark we thought we might have missed it because it was so dark, but finally, there it was just feet from the road in all it glory waiting for the next photo or selfie, that seems to draw people out here. The permanet exhibit was created by two artist Elmgreen and Dragset in October 2005 to resemble an actual Prada store. The two refer to their work as pop architectual land art with a bit of humor. They built this structure about 24 miles outside of Marfa in a city called Valentine Texas population around 200. To make it more interesting they found the least likely place to find a store like this and stuck in in far west texas. They added only right shoes and the purses have no bottoms. They have been vandalize several times now I guess people in this area like prada more than they knew. I am not sure what they were saying or not saying about their art. Maybe they were making fun of consumerism but you would have to ask them. As a photographer it great fun to shoot such a unique image. After the latest vandalism they have install cameras and the purses have GPS devices inside that detect movement so making it more difficult to shop there in the future. We had been to see the Marfa Lights many times but never venture over to Valentine to see the Prada Art display and we were glad we finally made it. Having this wonderful starry night sky really helped it pop out as a winning venture for us. Thanks for looking.

Sunrise at Santa Elena Canyon Pano

Captured this wonderful west Texas landscape panorama sunrise at Santa Elena Canyon just as the sun rays pop over the nearby mountains over the Rio Grande River from this vantage point in Big Bend National Park. It is not a too difficult a climb and you get a great view looking south. Santa Elena Canyon is one of the most impressive in Big Bend National Park it is visible for many miles away up to ten miles it can been seen. The Rio Grande changes direction abruptly after following beneath the straight Sierra Ponce cliffs for several miles heading west, cutting through the mountains via a deep, narrow canyon gorge in the mountain. It contains more than 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals. The park has many geological features including sea fossils and dinosaur bones, as well as previous volcanic activity. The park just recently open a Fossil Discovery Exhibit to display the dinosarurs that would of live there in the past when there was an inland sea. The national park covers 801,163 acres for more than 1,000 miles, the Rio Grande forms the boundary between Mexico and the United States, and Big Bend National Park administers approximately 118 miles along that boundary. Bluebonnet Dirt Road – Captured these bluebonnets along this cedar fence and dirt road in the backroads of the Texas hill country.  We had to go through two low water crossing with water up to the door to get here. This is just an example of the rural landscape in the hill country and how lovely it looks especially around bluebonnet season. To catch that Texas  landscapes you almost alway have to go down the back roads.

Colorful Wildflowers in Springtime – This great field of wildflowers with bluebonnets, and little yellow perky sue in this colorful field of flowers make for a nice contrast along the river in the Texas hill country.  I like the little pop of red from the indian paintbrush in the middle of the bluebonnet field on this lovely day with blue sky and white puffy clouds along the tree line of the river. If you want to add a bit of spring this would make a nice wildflower landscape from the Texas Hill Country.

Incredible Bluebonnet Landscape  – I pulled up this wonderful field of bluebonnets from my archives to share this great bluebonnet landscape along the Colorado river from spring a few years back.  This is Muleshoe Bend park and this was the most incredible site of texas bluebonnets I think I had ever seen.  As far as the eye could see it was acreas of bluebonnets along the river.  This area is normally under water and for a few short years during the drought this is what came up where the water had once been.  Well the water is back up and the bluebonnets are gone we just have a memories of these wonderful wildflower as they once were.

Springtime in Texas is my favorite time because of the wildflowers we can all thank Lady Bird for help in making spring special every year.

We loved all the different version of horns and this calf with his little horns were just too adorable in this field of bluebonnets.

Austin is the fastest growing city in the US and the 11th most populous city and is the seat of the Texas State Capitol. Vintage Pegasus with Reunion Tower in downtown Dallas

This Dallas vintage Pegasus show a close up with the Reunion Tower in the background as it appears to hoover over the city. The vintage Pegasus and the Reunion Tower are both official lankmarks for the city of Dallas and a toursit destination of things to see. Many come downtown to see these two iconic structures. The Vintage Pegasus has stood on top of the Magnolia Petroleum Building or Magnolia hotel since 1934 till 1999 when it came down due to damage over the years and and was replaced with a new flying horse which sits on top of the Magnoila Hotel today. It seem fitting to display the Pegasus as a Vintage Pegasus since this landmark has been around for a very long time. However in 2011 a group of Dallas artist and entreprenuers reconditioned the orginal flying horse back to life and it was place on an oil derrick in front of the Omni Hotel in downtown Dallas. Dallas pegasus have been a sense of pride for the people living here especially in the early 1940’s through 1999 as it came to be a become that you were home once you saw it. When the Magnolia was built it was the tallest building in Dallas so you could see the Pegasus from quite a distance. Now we have two Dallas Pegasos flying high over the Dallas skyline. The whole story of the pegasus came from greek mythology.
