Davis Mountain were originally known as Limpia Mountains, which are a range of mountains in West Texas. In 1938 the Davis Mountains State Park was open to the public, it is a 2,709-acre state park located in the Davis Mountains in Jeff Davis County, Texas named after Jefferson Davis. The closest town is Fort Davis Texas where the historic Fort Davis Frontier military Post is located. In the past Fort Davis been sort of quick drive through on our many trips to this area so we decided to spend a little more time here on our most recent trip after leaving Big Bend area we headed into Fort Davis and capture some wonderful pictures over the mountains in the state park. The state park has plenty to do for the adventurous type like hiking, backpacking, mountain biking the many trail built by the CCC,(Civilian Conservation Corp) which built the five mile skyline drive in the park along with installing picnic tables, fire pits and other buildings in the park. The Davis Mountain State Park has 1.75-mile CCC trail which connects with a trail to the Fort Davis National Historic Site below. Also be sure to visit the old rock building shelter in the state park where you can see sweeping views and some colorful sunrises and sunsets over the rugged Texas landscape. Also in the state park is the historic Indian Lodge which has 39 rooms, a restaurant and a pool for their guest or you can camp in the state park however the Indian Lodge was closed for some renovation while we were there. There are other things to do while in Fort Davis like star gazing as the moonless nights get really dark here and less than 22 miles away is the McDonald Observatory they have regular star parties you can view the stars from the telescopes or of course you can take a history tour of the observatory and the story of how it came to be here on Mount Fowlkes and all the challenges with building an astronomical observatory here. Also theres are some unique places like in downtown Fort Davis Drug Store and Hotel which has a real old timey soda fountain for the nostagic in those of us who remember those days you can get a fountain drink or shake bringing back those old memories from day past. In any case it worth a visit while your there. Also area in the surrounding area include Alpine, Marfa along with Terlingua not too far away. Also the Guadalupe National Park in west texas.
