Photo Blog: One Day At Caddo Lake

09/29/2023

I had the pleasure to be able to ride out with another photographer on Caddo lake one morning earlier in Sept and got to witness some beautiful scenery and an awesome sunrise. I got an early start that morning to meet the local photographer at his boat at 5:30am to get out to the first spot for sunrise. We arrived some 45min before sunrise and captured the beginning of the day. Then on the way back I was able to capture some amazing images of the bayous as the sun was just illuminating the Cyprus trees with the morning light and all the birds were out foraging for food.

It was an awesome way to start a Monday out on Caddo Lake watching the day start among the moss filled Cyprus trees.

Sunrise at Caddo Lake

Sunrise at Caddo Lake - A glorious capture as the sun popped over the horizon lighting up the clouds that started to appear right at sunrise. Right after sunrise the sky lit up the clouds with some wonderful colors of yellow and orange against a silhouette of cypress trees in the lake. We also like the nice reflections in the water of the trees in this early morning capture on Caddo Lake. It was an early morning boat ride to catch the sunrise from the larger area of the lake, best way to catch the colorful sky. The Caddo Lake is 25000 acres located in east Texas near Uncertain TX. Uncertain has a population of 93 in 2023. Caddo lake is in both Texas and Louisiana and is the largest cypress forest in the world.

Violet Crown Over Caddo Lake

Violet Crown Over Caddo Lake - While out taking photos at Caddo Lake in east Texas on a boat tour with another photographer early in the morning at dawn the sky started giving us some nice colors. The colors were opposite from where the sun would come up and I just happen to turn around and see some pinks and violets colors in the sky. right before sunrise. So I turned around and capture this from the other direction with what we call the violet crown colors. Caddo has the largest cypress forest in the world so it is unique to Texas and Louisana. I got great color in the sky and water with wonderful reflections of sky, cypress trees and great colors. In any case this was another special capture of the cypress trees with great reflections in the water in this two to one panorama. Caddo lake border both Texas and Louisiana.

A Kiss of Light in Caddo

A Kiss of Light in Caddo - Deep in the heart of Caddo Lake we saw a kiss of light breaking through the cypress trees to add just enough light to capture this image. Caddo Lake is like no other place and there is so much beauty here it is amazing. We were slowly drifting through one area after another with each one giving us another taste of this natural beauty of swamps and bald cypress trees every where we went. My guide was another photographer who knew his way around and took me to some beautiful spots. This spot was beautiful with a slight mist over the water creating this blue haze and the green cypress tree in view as the morning light came through the trees. Kiss of first morning light on the Cypress Trees of Caddo Lake

Kiss of first morning light on the Great Cypress Trees of Caddo - It was beautiful in the early morning and this photo of the cypress trees were just receiving the first kiss of light in the early morning with a slight mist over the water yet still captured the reflections in the of the trees in the water. In east Texas there is a large cypress swamp this is around 25000 acreas along the border of Texas and Louisiana. The area has many adjoining lakes, ponds, bayous and a river channels to travel and the best way is by boat. I hired a guide to takes me out to see this wondrous landscape. For two mornings we travel through out different areas of Caddo Lake and bayous. The closest town is a place called Uncertain Texas with a population of 93 which kind of leads to the charm of the place.

Mysterious Caddo Lake Panorama

Mysterious Caddo Lake Panorama - As the late afternoon light filter in to the heart of the Caddo Lake I saw this most beautiful scene with endless cypress trees that needed to be shown in a panorama. Sometimes you need to expand in order to try and show the cypress swamp with its wonderful cypress trees immersed in the water. We decided to come when everything would still be green and lush which added to its beauty. You see the feathery green leaves of the cypress tree and spanish moss hanging down. This image brings out the beautiful bald cypress trees with their feathery leaves in the late afternoon with barely a breeze. Looking deep into the swamp the light created some beautiful reflections over the water with nothing but cypress trees with their roots exposed and the spanish moss hangings from their branches and lily pads floating on the water in this panorama. Today was a good day as the beauty of the area takes you in. Caddo Lake is a 25,400-acre lake and bayou on the border between Texas and Louisiana, in northern Harrison County and southern Marion County in Texas and Caddo Parish in Louisiana. Caddo lake, bayous and ponds are all connected which are the largest naturally formed lake in Texas and the largest cypress forest in the world. It a wonder of nature with botanic and wildlife everywhere you look.

As we were drifting along we came across this blue heron which had flown over here and landed on this large branch jutting out of over the water. Caddo Cypress Trees and Lily Pads - It was a lovely day in the late afternoon at Saw Mill Pond in Caddo State Park where I was almost alone while here. Last time we came it was in the all a few years ago and it was packed for fall colors. The Saw Mill pond is part of the 25,000 acre's of the lake with ponds, bayous, and the larger lake area that runs all the way into Louisiana.
