The Texas State capitol is the capitol and seat of government of the state of Texas. The capital of Texas is Located in Austin, Texas. The Texas capitol houses the offices and chambers of the Texas Legislature and of the Governor of Texas. Designed in 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed from 1882 to 1888 under the direction of civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker. A $75 million underground extension was completed in 1993. The Texas State Capitol is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The Texas Capitol is 308 feet tall and is the second tallest capitol in the United States. It is made of Oak Hill limestone hidden behind red granite. The building itself covers 2.25 acres and sits on the grounds of over 20 acres. Within its walls are a mural of the Battle of San Jacinto, portraits of each person who has governed Texas, nearly 400 rooms and over 2,000 windows. Monuments fill the grounds of the capitol and commemorate important people and events such as Texas Rangers, Heroes of the Alamo, Confederate Soldiers, and Volunteer Firemen.
