Mansfield Dam Austin Texas Pano

Mansfield Dam Austin Texas Pano - Mansfield Dam is located on hwy 620 between Lakeway Texas and Austin Texas and is a major recreational place in the hill country to visit. The Mansfield Dam was completed in 1942 after previous years of major floods which created downstream flooding. The first dam was build at 190 feet but later raised to 265 after another devasting flood in 1938 deem that the current 190 would not be enough. Today lake travis is the largest reservoir lake out of the seven on the high land lakes system with it being 63.5 miles long. Lake travis has the big bowl as we call it and then begins a serpentine winding through out the hill country all the way to Max Starke Dam along the highland lakes. The highland lakes are part of the colorado river system that have been damed to prevent flooding of the degree that they saw back in the early 1900s when downtown Austin was under water several times. Lake Travis is a very popular lake for swimming, fishing, boating and more. However having the dam did not prevent all floods as Austin has suffered from many floods such as the memorial day floods and many others over the years. Today over the lake we had some nice puffy white clouds with a blue sky and wonderful greenery around the area for a great panorama. On the other side of Lake Travis is Lake Austin and another place people come to enjoy the waters for fishing, swiming, and boating. Lake Austin has several public parks that you can come and enjoy the waters there and picnic. Lake Austin flows into Austin Lady Bird Lake and on to the Texas coast. The dam was name after a Texas Senator who work hard to make it happen, also instrumental was a young Senator LBJ who later became president. Of course on this day when we took this photo we wish we were in the water as it was over a 100 degrees, The highland lakes are managed by the LCRA all the way to the coast.
