Palo Duro Canyon Lighthouse at Twilight

Palo Duro Canyon Lighthouse at Twilight - I captured this image of the Palo Duro Canyon Lighthouse hoodoos with some stormy clouds at twilight. We liked the violet crown colors of the stormy skies behind the lighthouse hoodoos in the distance. When I started out at the the trail head for the Lighthouse at Palo Duro Canyon State Park all looked good for my hike to the lighthouse hoodoos to capture a sunset image, however shortly in about two miles in the skies started getting darker then it started to sprinkle but I continued. After a while the skies went completely dark with lightning so I hunker down for a bit to try wait it out. I noticed that the skies to the west looked clear so it looked like it was moving a way from here. The trail was more difficult than anticipated which slow me down a bit. I was moving down the lighthouse trail which took me up and down across washes and over old river beds it was more difficult than anticipated especially with 40 pounds of camera gear and tripod. The hike to the Lighthouse rock is a 6 mile round trip and along with the rocky terrain so not an easy trek as I thought but finally got through. My plan was to catch a sunset so it would require walking back in the dark so you want to get every last shot you can. I liked this with the stormy skies breaking with some nice clouds with some of those violet crown colors I like to see. Even on my journey after the skies went dark and it began to rain and then the lightning began, I almost turned around but decided I was too close to turn around now and I am glad I did. Once I got to the trail lighthouse hoodoos and rested up a bit I climb up the 400 ft or so to a higher rocky platform level to capture this image of the lighthouse with some nice storm clouds right after sunset. After a little more rain passed the skies had that after the storm look with colorful clouds and sky after sunset so I continued to climb up and capture more images of this colorful mesa rock formation. The Palo Duro Canyon Lighthouse hoodoos is somewhat of a landmark for the area so I had to get the shot. The Palo Duro canyon was formed millions of years ago by water, and wind erosion. Water erosion over the millennia has shaped the canyon's geological formations like this mesa and hoodoo at the Palo Duro Canyon lighthouse . Palo Duro Canyon hoodoos was formed by water erosion from the Red River. The water deepens the canyon by moving sediment downstream. Wind and water erosion gradually widen the canyon. Now I can say when it come to wind this whole area of the Texas Panhandle was so windy so this is not a shock it was rocking our RV most of the night. Most of the terrain in the panhandle is very flat and as you drive up to the state park you start to see some major changes in the landscape from flat to big wide gullies until you get into the park. There you can see for a good distance across the vast area of the canyons with peak and valleys and hoodoos. Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States with the largest being the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Many call this the Texas grand canyons.
