Stars Over Bridge

This is horizontal image of the milky way as it came up over this old railroad bridge in the Texas Hill country. The "Milky Way" can be seen as a hazy band of white light some 30 degrees wide arcing across the sky. The milkyway can be seen better at certain times of the year and we had planned this well in advance inorder to get the best shot.  The milkyway is the galaxy that our solar system is in and the term milky has to do with the milky look which is really just a band of light that contains all the gallaxy, stars, planets, gas, dust, etc in the solar system. The Milky way is believed to contain 100-400 billion planets, and as much as 100 billion stars.  We used some light painting to bring out the bridge so we did not over expose the sky. You can see the light pollution in the background from one of the near by cities. The milkyway can be seen better at certain times of the year and we had planned this well in advance in order to get the best shot. After we came across this old rail road bridge we waited till we could get the best night sky when the moon would not be up and where we could get a better image of the galaxy with out too much light pollution. Well you can see we didn't get far enough away and the light pollution from the nearby towns showed up in the image.  We were proud that this photo was selected to be on display at Austin City Hall for a year for their Art in Public Places.
