Texas Firewheels Along the Fence

Texas Firewheels Along the Fence - We came across these wonderful firewheel wildlowers, also called indian blankets growing along this rustic mesquite fence in the texas hill country. We had a nice blue sky with some clouds along with the green leaves of the mesquite trees in the back ground. Another wonderful capture of firewheels or as some call them indian blankets wildflowers. They got their name of indian blankets from the way they would just cover an area with these colors of indian blankets. We just think they are lovely with all the variety between them some are all red, orange, some or pink, and some have just the tips of their leaves with yellow. I have read that they started out as a yellow wildflower but over time the red colors took over. Their scientific name is Gaillardia pulchella and or a member of the aster family. The flower heads are about 1 to 2 inches across and they grow up to 3 feet tall with the flowers being mostly red in the center with yellow tips on the leaves. Every year in spring time they come out after other wildflowers like bluebonnets and indian paintbrush have gone down so our texas wildflowers season continues into early summer so it alway fun to see what will pops up next.
