The Waterfall

The Waterfall - This room at the Cave Without a Name just looked so much like an alien world with some of the structure looking so majestic and beautiful. They refer to this as the waterfall room as it appears a waterfall flows through the opening to the new area. This limestone cave without a name is located near Boerne Texas west of San Antonio and is a Natural National Landmark. It is a limestone cave with rooms filled with stalactites and stalagmite structures from calcium carbonate limestone and it create these wonderful strucktures as it reacts with water and depending on the minerals compostion the colors can be white, amber, brown or red. The stalagmite grow from the bottom up and stalactites grow from the ceiling down. This room is a large room that had many unique stalagmite that created this ominous looking ancient structures that almost looked like ancient sculptures. It was such a beautiful place with the stalactites and stalamite from the ceiling and floor creating these wonderful ancient structure which have been shaped over thousands of years in this natural enviroment. The actual cave was discovered in 1929 when a goat fell down a sink hole in the ground and a child was lowered down the hole to retrieve the goat. Where the child came back and said it was a huge cavern below that went on and in the 1930 they began exploration of the cave. it was discovered that it open up to these wonderful large rooms in the cave. There are some stories that it was used for a while in making moonshine in the 1920s and later on was open up as the Cave Without a Name to visitors sometime around 1939. Estimates of the cave's age vary from 100 million up to 400 million years, when the land was covered by a shallow sea that carved out large underground cavities. The cave goes down appoximately100 feet and maintains a constant 66 degrees. Today they are digging out more of the cave as there are other passages that they have found. This is the opening to the entrance of the new area where they are digging out possibly more rooms at the area where they call the waterfall to the right of the entrance. Based on the bones of animals they have found in the cave was accessable to prehistoric animals. Photo © copyright by Bee Creek Photography - Tod Grubbs / Cynthia Hestand.
