Independence Texas

Independence Texas - Independence is of historic significance because of the settlers who first made this area home. John P. Cole settled in the area in 1824 along with General Sam Houston later on in 1850. The area got its name after Republic of Texas got it independence from Mexico after the battle of the Washington on the Brazos in 1836. Independence was a town of college educated people for a short period of time with Baylor University having a campus both for men and women, separate campuses of course as the times dictated. The importance for Gen Sam Houston of moving here was for his children to be well educated and be near by. However as time went by and the civil war ended the towns good fortune, began to decline without a lot of industry around to keep it relevant. Shortly after this Baylor University for men moved to Waco Texas. The women of Baylor were later merged into Baylor main campus in Waco from Bellton where they now share the same campus. Mostly the town exist today with just a few people still living in the town of Independence area with some historical churches, old baylor park, John P. Cole cabin, along with tours of historic homes, and an antique rose garden open to the public. This mural appears to be on the back side of this old general store that is now used as an art studio. It seem the mural has been changed over the years as this is the latest to this mural. Independence is in Washington county.
